The Grapevine, Texas, video game seller has already closed hundreds of locations in the wake of a "store portfolio optimization review." Here's the latest.
In the last fiscal year, GameStop closed 590 U.S. stores, according to Fast Company. GameStop stated in a December Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it would close a “significant number of additional stores” in the 2025 fiscal year, which ends Jan. 31, 2026.
The new closures follow the 590 U.S. stores that closed during the last fiscal year as part of GameStop's "store portfolio optimization review" (via Fast Company ), with 1,000 stores worldwide closing over the preceding year, as CNN reported in March 2025, after it shared its intention to invest in Bitcoin.
With the stores becoming a common target for thieves, some of the stores in the Chicago area are taking new steps to fight back.
